There is no need for sailing equipment or facilities to be part of the competition. Simply register now to be a part of it all in the inaugural Olympic Virtual Series Sailing Event!

You can play on multiple devices, such as a tablet, mobile device, or computer. It doesn’t matter if you sail for fun, for competition, or if you are a gamer ready to try something new. Join us to sail the specially-designed routes for this first competition of its kind, and play side-by-side with professionals and legends of the sport, including Olympic hopeful Bart Lambriex (NED) and Spain SailGP Team member Joan Cardona (ESP).

The sailing simulator closely matches the rules and formats from the real world, adding accuracy and a close connection to the real world of sailing — credibility that is valuable to eSailors of all skill levels.

The event will offer two types of Sailing experience:

  1. OFFSHORE MODE: The ‘Rio to Tokyo Race,’ which begins on 28 May, will focus on tactics, strategy, and judgment. In this mode, players will take a 25-30 day sailing route from Rio de Janeiro to Tokyo.
  2. INSHORE MODE: Starting on 20 May, it will feature three action-fuelled events which will each crown a winner.

Brazilians Grael and Kunze claim dramatic win in 49erFX class

Martine Grael and Kahena Kunze provided the 10-day sailing programme on Guanabara Bay with a heartstopping finale, as they claimed a surprise gold for Brazil in a tightly contested women’s 49erFX class.

In what was the last and perhaps most hotly disputed medal race of the 10-day Rio Olympic Regatta, Jena Hansen and Katja Salskov-Iversen of Denmark won bronze, pushing Spain's Tamara Echegoyen Dominguez and Berta Betanzos Moro, who stood first overall before the medal race, off the podium.

The pair's success was a formality and they eased home with a fourth-place finish in the medal race.

New Zealand's Peter Burling and Blair Tuke were assured of silver already, but Denmark's Allan Norregaard and Peter Lang produced a late burst to secure bronze ahead of final race winners Austria and fellow hopefuls Great Britain.

Meanwhile, there is a real battle for gold taking shape in the women's 470 class.

New Zealand's Jo Aleh/Olivia Powrie and Great Britain's Hannah Mills/Saskia Clark are mathematically assured of a medal after today's racing.

Only Olympic medal: The Cyprus sailing hero

While winning an Olympic medal is a personal goal for thousands of athletes, for 24 nations it is a dream that has only ever come true once. A look at the glorious moment and the impact it had on the lives of the athletes who achieved it.

The background

Sailor Pavlos Kontides has the honour of being the only athlete to have achieved an Olympic medal for Cyprus. He became Cyprus’ first and only Olympic medalist when he took silver in the Men's Laser class at the Olympic Games London 2012. Back then, his victory was significant for the small island nation as he brought hope to Cyprus during a time of crisis.

Kontides was born in Limassol, a city that lies on the southern coast, in 1990. He started sailing when he was just nine years old and by 14, he had started training seriously, turning the sport from a hobby into a lifestyle.

“He had the whole package, it’s not only the talent, but he also is a true gem, a hard worker with military discipline, and he is very humble,” Yiannis Papazoglou, Kontides’s first coach at the Limassol Nautical Club told Reuters.
